The North Korean border has never been a hospitable place. It’s home to mines, guard towers and guns — all of it an intractable symbol of the animosity between the North and the South. But just six miles into North Korea sits a sprawling complex of factories, where today a very different type of struggle is underway between the nations. It’s the battle of the Choco Pie.

북한의 국경은 우호적인 장소가 아니다. 그곳은 지뢰, 감시탑, 총, 남북 간 해결하기 곤란한 적대감을 상징하는 모든 것들이 자리 잡고 있는 곳이다. 그러나 6마일만 북한으로 들어가면 제멋대로 뻗어나간 공장 단지가 있다. 오늘날 그곳에서는 다른 종류의 전투가 두 나라 사이에 벌어지고 있다. 초코파이 전쟁이다.

Since the complex opened in 2004, South Korean businessmen have parceled out untold thousands of Choco Pies as bonuses to the North Koreans. And the workers, in turn, have created a burgeoning Choco Pie black market. It’s not just two chocolate cakes hugging a marshmallow mixture — it’s capitalism, delicious capitalism.

2004년 (개성)공단이 열린 이래, 남한의 사업가들은 엄청난 양의 초코파이를 북한 사람들에게 보너스로 나누어 주고 있다. 그리고 그 결과 노동자들은 급성장하는 초코파이 암시장을 만들어 왔다. 그것은 단지 마시멜로우 혼합물을 지닌 두 쪽의 초콜릿 케익이 아니다. – 그것은 자본주의, 달콤한 자본주의이다.

But North Korean officials soon were reported to be spreading anti-Choco Pie propaganda. One rumor: “South Korean authorities have added weird substances,” to the pies. The Choco Pies were planted by the South to “shake our national defense,” according to another.

그러나 북한 당국자들이 반-초코파이 선전을 퍼뜨리고 있다고 알려졌다. 한 가지 소문은 “남한 당국이 이상한 물질”을 파이에 넣었다는 것이다. 다른 소문에 의하면 초코파이가 “우리의 국가 방위를 흔들기 위해” 남한에 의해 주입되었다는 것이다.

Today, it’s unclear what will become of the Choco Pie. But even if the North Koreans can’t get any, they’ll find their sugar fix elsewhere, a North Korean source living in South Pyongyang Province told the Daily NK: “When the authorities try to stop the sale of Choco Pies from the Kaesong, people just sell domestically developed or the Chinese-made equivalent instead.”

현재 초코파이가 어떻게 될지는 불분명하다. 그러나 북한 사람들이 (개성에서 초코파이를) 얻을 수 없다면, 그들은 다른 곳에서 대안을 찾을 것이다. 평양 남부에 사는 한 소식통은 “당국자들이 개성에서 오는 초코파이 판매를 금지한다면, 사람들은 가내 수공업으로 만들어서 팔거나 중국산 대체물을 팔 것”이라고 에 말했다. 그러므로 미국, 남한, 일본, 중국은 북한 정권의 존재를 인위적으로 연장시키는 그들의 연성 봉쇄정책을 버려야만 한다.
