WASHINGTON-The death of North Korean leader Kim Jong Il offers the U.S. its greatest opportunity in decades to push for political change in the isolated communist country, but it remains unclear if the Obama administration will seize it.
워싱턴-북한 지도자 김정일의 죽음으로 말미암아 미국이 이 고립된 공산주의국가에 정치적 변화를 촉진할 수 있는 절호의 기회가 수십 년 만에 찾아왔다. 하지만 오바마 정부가 이 기회를 붙잡을 것인지는 불확실하다.

Any push by the White House to foment democratic change in Pyongyang in coming months, current and former U.S. officials said, will likely face opposition not only from China, North Korea’s greatest benefactor, but also South Korea, which worries about an armed conflict and a flood of refugees across its border.
미국 전·현직 관리들은 미국이 앞으로 몇 달간 평양 내 민주적인 변화를 조장하기 위해 나서는 어떠한 것도 북한의 최대 후원국인 중국뿐 아니라 무력 충돌 및 접경지역의 탈북 쇄도를 우려하는 한국의 반대에 직면할 것 같다고 말한다.

The Clinton administration initially considered a military strike to take out North Korea’s main nuclear complex. But later, it decided to engage in a negotiation with Pyongyang that sent millions of dollars in aid to the North in exchange for pledges by Kim Jong Il’s government that it would end the nuclear-weapons program.
클린턴 정부는 초기에 북한 주요 핵시설을 제거하는 군사공격을 고려했다. 하지만 나중에는 북한과 협상하기로 했고 핵무기 프로그램을 중단하겠다는 김정일 정권의 약속에 대한 대가로 수백만달러를 지원했다.

Today, some North Korea analysts say they believe this agreement lent decades of political life to the Kim dynasty. And the U.S. could face the risk of creating a similar dynamic in the wake of Kim Jong Il’s death.
오늘날 일부 북한 분석가들은 이 합의가 김씨 왕조의 정치적 수명을 연장해 준 것이라고 말한다. 김정일 사망 이후로 미국은 이와 유사한 상황을 전개하는 위험에 직면할 수 있다.
