Younger Kim faces need to prove himself

North Korea is straining to present an illusion of continuity. Throughout Kim Jong-il? funeral, the successor was flanked by some of his father? chief lieutenants. Just in case we did not understand this choreography, Pyongyang later announced ?oolish politicians?around the world should understand its policies would not change.

북한은 (정권)지속에 대한 환상을 보여주려고 안간힘을 쓰고 있다. 김정일의 장례 내내 후계자는 아버지의 수석 부관들에게 호위를 받았다. 나중에 평양은 우리가 이 연출을 이해하지 못했을 경우를 대비해서 세계의 ‘어리석은 정치인들’은 북한의 정책이 변함없다는 것을 알아야 할 것이라고 발표했다.

However, beneath this rhetoric, it is impossible to pretend nothing has changed. Kim Jong-eun has been elevated suddenly while still in his late 20s and will not enjoy the absolute power of his father and grandfather. Instead, he will head a messy government by committee in which rival generals will jostle to control him.

하지만 이 수사법 이면을 보면 아무것도 변하지 않은 척하기는 불가능하다. 아직 20대 후반인 김정은은 갑자기 승진했고 아버지나 할아버지의 절대 권력을 누리지 않을 것이다. 대신에 자기를 장악하려고 앞다투는 장성들로 구성된 위원회를 통해 골치 아픈 정권을 이끌어 갈 것이다.

The greater threat, though, is his need to prove himself. North Korea has promised it will pass through the ?ateway of a mighty and prosperous nation?this year. ?rosperous?is impossible. A quarter of its people are starving and the power grid is moribund. Opening the floodgates to foreign investment, even from China, could trigger destabilising social change.

더 큰 위협은 자신을 입증해야 할 필요성이다. 북한은 올해 (사상, 군사, 경제면에서) “강성대국의 문”을 열겠다고 약속해왔다. “경제강국”은 불가능하다. 주민의 25%가 굶주리고 있고 전력망은 빈사상태다. 그 출처가 중국이라 할지라도 해외 투자가 봇물같이 쏟아지는 길을 열면 불안정한 사회 변화를 촉발시킬 수 있다.

As he mourns his father fear must be mixing with grief for Kim Jong-eun. China and the US can try to soothe him with talks and food aid. Fundamentally, though, they must plan for a scrappy endgame, realising this cornered and untested young man surely feels he must fight for his own life and that of his state.

아버지의 죽음을 애통해하는 김정은에게는 공포와 슬픔이 섞여 있다. 중국과 미국은 대화와 식량 지원으로 그를 달래려고 할 수 있다. 그렇지만 근본적으로 그들은 검증되지 않은 채 궁지에 몰린 이 젊은이가 자신과 국가의 생명을 위해 싸워야 한다고 느끼는 것을 자각하고 지리멸렬한 종반전을 계획해야 한다.
