Flynn’s firing is a scandal. But his hiring was, too

Russian lawmakers conspicuously rushed to Flynn’s defense, with some claiming his ouster was due to the Russophobia endemic to Washington. But Flynn is guilty of acting on his own phobias. Long before his ties to Russia came under question, Flynn was known for harboring an extreme anti-Muslim worldview and for peddling Islamophobic conspiracy theories.

러시아 의원들은 플린의 경질1)이 워싱턴에 만연한 러시아 혐오증에 의한 것이라고 주장하며 그를 적극 옹호하고 나섰다. 그러나 플린은 자신이 지니고 있던 혐오증에 의거해 행동하였다는 죄목을 지닌다. 러시아와의 유대 관계가 도마 위에 오르기 훨씬 전부터, 그는 극단적 반무슬림 세계관을 지닌 채 이슬람 혐오증 음모론을 유포해온 것으로 알려졌다.

Flynn warned about a phantom Islamic takeover of the United States. “Islam is not a real religion, but a political ideology masked behind a religion,” Flynn claimed. He has repeatedly raged against the supposed “political correctness” of those who fear his rhetoric may alienate millions of Muslims, including American citizens.

플린은 ‘이슬람의 미국 장악’이라는 환상에 대해 경고하며, “이슬람은 진정한 종교가 아니라 종교의 탈을 쓴 정치 이데올로기다.”라고 주장했다. ‘플린의 레토릭이 미국 시민을 포함한 수많은 무슬림들을 소외시킬지도 모른다.’고 우려하는 사람들의 이른바 “정치적 올바름”에 대해 그는 반복적으로 분노를 표출했다.

You can draw a straight line from the extreme views of Flynn and others in the White House to Trump’s travel ban on refugees and immigrants from seven Muslim-majority countries. That Flynn’s views didn’t automatically disqualify him from such a vital and strategic post in the world’s most powerful government speaks volumes about the deep Islamophobia within the Trump administration.

7개 무슬림 국가의 난민과 이민자에 대한 트럼프의 여행금지도 플린과 백악관 내 다른 인사들의 극단적인 견해와 맥을 같이 한다. 플린의 이러한 견해가 세상에서 가장 강력한 정부의 중요하고도 전략적인 자리로부터 그를 자동적으로 자격박탈 시키지 못했다는 사실은, 트럼프 행정부 내의 뿌리 깊은 이슬람 혐오증에 대해 많은 것을 말해준다.

Not surprisingly, Muslim rights groups cheered Flynn’s departure. “We welcome Michael Flynn’s resignation and hope it is followed by that of all the other anti-Muslim bigots currently formulating domestic and international policies in the White House,” said Nihad Awad of the Council on American-Islamic Relations. “Our nation is best served by those who base their policy recommendations on facts, not fear.”

무슬림 권익집단들이 플린의 경질에 환호한 것은 놀랍지 않다. “우리는 마이클 플린의 사임을 환영하며 이러한 일들이 현재 백악관에서 국내외 정책을 만들어내고 있는 다른 모든 반(反)무슬림 편협자들에게까지도 이어지기를 바라고 있다.”고 미국이슬람관계위원회 소속 Nihad Awad가 말했다. “우리나라는 정책의 근거를 두려움이 아닌 사실에 두는 사람들에 의해 가장 잘 운영된다.”
